A dismissed case is the strongest position anyone in this category can hold, and most people who have one do not know it.
They arrive assuming that because the record is accurate, nothing can be done. The record is accurate. It is also, in every sense that matters to a reader, incomplete, because it reports that you were accused and never reports that the accusation went nowhere.
Our main guide covers court records generally. This page is about the dismissal specifically, why it changes the argument, and the seven firms that use it properly.
Why dismissal is the strongest argument available
Every other route in this industry asks a publisher to suppress true information for the subject’s convenience. This one does not.
A site publishing a charge without the disposition is presenting a partial account of a completed matter. That is not a favor you are requesting. It is an accuracy problem in their own content, and it is the only argument in this field that a publisher can accept without setting a precedent they will regret.
The distinction is worth stating in your request in exactly those terms. You are not asking them to hide that you were charged. You are asking them to report what happened.
Four dispositions, and they are not equal
Charges never filed. The strongest. A police officer made an arrest and the prosecutor declined to proceed. Nothing was ever tested and no court reached any conclusion.
Dismissed or nolle prosequi. Nearly as strong. The case entered the system and the state chose not to continue it. Documentation is straightforward from the clerk.
Acquittal. Strong, and frequently underused because people assume a trial makes the record permanent. A verdict of not guilty is a court’s conclusion, which is more than most dispositions offer.
Diversion or deferred adjudication completed. Weaker and still useful. Terms differ by jurisdiction, and in many the case is dismissed on completion, which puts you in the second category.
Establish which you have from the clerk’s record rather than from memory, because the wording on the document is what a publisher will act on.
Some states impose obligations, and it is worth ten minutes to check
A number of states have legislated against the publish and charge model around booking photos and arrest data, and the common shape includes prohibiting a fee for removal where the case was dismissed or produced no conviction, sometimes with a required response window.
Coverage is uneven and the detail differs, so treat this as a question rather than a rule. Your state attorney general’s consumer protection office will tell you whether anything applies, at no cost.
If something does apply, paying a company to obtain what a site is already obliged to provide is the worst outcome available, and it happens.
Get the paperwork before you call anyone
The single most useful step, and it is administrative rather than clever.
Request a certified copy of the disposition from the clerk of the court that heard the matter. It usually costs a small fee. Request several, because sites may each want their own and obtaining them later is slower.
Firms wait on this document more than on anything else. Arriving with it converts a first call from a scoping conversation into an actionable one, and it is the difference between a real quote and a guess.
The seven
Minc Law
Internet defamation firm in Cleveland, founded 2018, litigating in 26 states and 5 countries with more than 200,000 pieces of content removed. The relevant capability is the escalation: a site shown a dismissal that continues publishing the charge as though it stood is closer to a false statement of fact than a stale record, and that is this firm’s territory.
National Security Law Firm
Washington DC, all 50 states, at a flat 3,000 dollars per item refunded in full if the item is not removed or de-indexed. Their published practice names takedowns following dismissed or dropped charges specifically.
The economics work unusually well on a dismissal, because compliance rates are high when the documentation is strong, which means the refund is unlikely to be triggered and you are buying near-certainty at a known price. Count your listings first, since the fee is per item.
RM Warner Law
Scottsdale, more than a decade in internet defamation, offering demand letters through to court ordered removal. Worth raising at the first call: the 2018 State Bar of Arizona investigation of the partners over lawsuits naming apparently fictitious defendants, which resulted in discipline for two attorneys.
Kohrman Jackson and Krantz
A content removal group inside a full service business firm dating to 1918, working nationally on retainer. The case for this shape is a dismissal that sits alongside something continuing, an employment matter, a licensing question, a civil claim arising from the same events.
Defamation Defenders
Boulder, founded 2016, focused on mugshot and arrest record removal, accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 2019 with an A rating, reported project pricing 500 to 5,000 dollars.
The specialism fits, because a dismissal usually involves the arrest aggregator network rather than general search results. The standing caveat applies: guaranteed results and money back marketing about third party content, with Trustpilot complaints describing substantial payments and no updates. Define the result in writing.
Reputation Resolutions
Colorado, founded 2013, BBB accredited since 2014 with a reported clean complaint history, running removal on pay for performance.
Pay for performance is well matched to a dismissal, because the odds are genuinely good and a provider who believes that should be willing to bill on outcomes. If they hedge on a strongly documented dismissal, ask why. Independent review volume is thin.
Top Shelf Reputation
Our own service. On a dismissal we ask for the certified disposition first and build the site list second, and we frame every request as a completeness problem in the publisher’s content rather than as a removal favor, because that framing is what gets agreement.
We also tell clients when a state statute may cover them, because that route is free and taking a fee for it would be the specific abuse this category is known for.
Against us: no published pricing, so comparison requires a call.

The order that works
- Get certified copies of the disposition. Several.
- Ask your state attorney general’s office whether a statute covers your situation.
- Build the list of every site showing the charge, including image results.
- Send the documentation yourself to the sites with working contact forms. A meaningful share comply without anyone being hired.
- Then price what remains, which will be a shorter list than you started with.
Statutes and eligibility vary by state, and nothing here substitutes for advice from an attorney licensed where the case was heard. Notes on individual aggregators are in the blog, and a case review costs nothing if you would rather have the list built for you.
